“The Lieutenant of Inishmore” is a lurid, grotesque, wicked, fairy story in which there are no adults, just mad, vicious children, which just makes it even more bizarre. It is a bizarre world where cats are just a little bit more important than humans.
The theater performance basically speaks about love, in a very strange way, because it points out all the opposites, all the contrasts of love. So basically, for us to see love, to feel love, and to know about love, we need to go through hell which is produced on the stage from the beginning till the end, just to see for ourselves, how bad the world without peace and love actually is. This is a play that was banned in a lot of different theaters in different countries around the world because of how actually violent and in the same way honest it was. All the characters in it are modern, direct, speak informal, and most importantly – unconscious. They are making bad decisions, and living in a very disruptive absurd way. Their first choice is always to create war and not peace.
The actors perform in an almost hyperrealistic manner, only to expose the full horror that stems from terror itself.
